SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT CLUB.
The annual steeplechase meeting of the South Canterbury Hunt Club was held at Mr Elworthy's Holme Btation, Pareora, on Thursday. There was a good attendance of hunting men, and many ladies. Messrs A. Elworthy, Cartwright and Higginbotham had prepared a capital course, and very complete arrangements were ma.de for the comfort of the visitors. There w<»re four events, two of them flat races. Of the hunting contests, Mr Melville Gray's Bell Bird (Mr Sydney) won the Four-mile Steeplechase fr*>m six others, in 9min 46sec; and MrW. Kernohan's Honeaiy (Mr Sydney) won the Twomile Steeplechase in 4min 55eec. The former was a good race, the latter spoiled by refusals and aocidents, only two ont of six starters getting round without mishap. Au accident happened to Howard, Dr Thomas's groom. 'The doctor's hovae got away, and the groom rode after him. Somehow the bit broke, aud, losing control of bis horse, Howard threw himself off, landing on his head. ' He was picked up unconscious, and carried to the Btation. He recovered in the evening, and was taken home yesterday, not much the worce for-fcia mishap.
