Industrial Association.
« A special meeting of the General Committee of the Canterbury Industrial Association was held at the exhibition office at the drill-shed ground yesterday afternoon; present—Messrs H. B. Kirk (president), B. C. Bishop, N. Oates, T. N. Horsley, A. H. Hanoock, Bv. Buchanan, A. W. Beaven and J. Clegg. In reply to a letter from theSecretary of theEatudiantina Band it waß decided to grant the patronage of the Association at the concert in aid of the band's funds. A letter was read from the President of the Trades and Labour Council, acknowledging receipt ef an invitation to the lecture recently given by Mr G. Herbert Elliott, and expressing regret that he had received it too late to bring it before a meeting of the Council. The President laid on the table letters from certain persons, which have already been published, protesting against certain items in the new Customs tariff. It was decided to forward them to the Government. Mr Horsley stated that he had received a letter from Mr W. W. Tanner, one of the members of the Tariff Commission, Btating that the Commiaaion, much against his will, had decided to recommend that cement imported by local bodies should be admitted duty free. The Government had not accepted the proposal, and the duty remained! as before. Seven gentlemen were elected' members of the Association. A letter was received from the Under-Secretary for Mines, acknowledging the receipt of a report of a subcommittee of the Association in respect to opening the Brockley and Wairiri coalmines by an extension of the railway from Whitecliffs, and stating that it had been forwarded to the Minister of Public Works for his consideration.
