COUNTRY NEWS.

WOODEND. — The Bible and Mutual Improvement Class met on Monday evening in the Wesleyan Sunday-school, when the President (the Rev J. Dellow) gave a very interesting lecture on his travels through the Rotorua district. There was a large attendance, and a pleasant evening was spent. CRUELTY TO A HORSE. — At Timaru, yesterday, a farming contractor, named J. Simmons, was fined 10s, and costs £3 9s, by Major Keddell, S.M., for cruelty to a horse. His Worship remarked that it was not a of wilful bad [usage,] being an offence of omission, but when defendant saw that the horse was not likely to get better, and was in great pain, he ought, to have destroyed it. VALEDICTORY.— On Tuesday evening a social gathering took place in connection with the Rangiora Methodist Church, with the object of bidding good-bye to Mr T. Sutherland, who is leaving for Wellington. There was a large attendance, and the Rev J. Edwards presided. Mr Sutherland has for several years rendered good service to the church in connection with the choir and in other ways. He was made the recipient of a suitable parting gift, and hearty good wishes for his future were expressed. PRESENTATIOINS. — The Rev Father Malone, who has lately been removed from Temuka to Christchurch, was presented with an address and gold watch in the Catholic schoolroom, Temuka, by the congregation, on Tuesday. Mr M. Quinn occupied the chair. Mr J. M. Twomey read the address, and Mr W. Fitzgerald made the presentation. The Rev Father Malone feelingly replied in an appropriate speech. A lengthy programme of songs, &c., was gone through, refreshments being handed round during the evening. The proceedings closed with singing " Auld Lang Syne." — At Belfast, on Monday evening, Mr W. B. Border, one of the engineers of the freezing works, who is leaving the district was presented with a handsome silver-mounted pipe, walking-stick, and silver matchb-ox, on behalf of a few of his fellow-workmen. The presentation was made by Mr H. Smith.
