Winter Work Fund.

j 10 THB EDITOR. i ' Sib,— Will you kindly permit me to i correct an error which appeared in this j morning's issue of your paper, where you 1 notify that -£35 were received by the Mayor on Saturday last by way of subscrip- ' tion from the Canterbury Branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants to the Winter Work Fund. The amount in question has been subscribed by the railway employe's generally and some of the officers, and the Bociety cannot, and does not desire, to claim the credit. I I made it a point, when handing the cheque , to his Worship, to impress this fact upon j his mind, and I think it a pity that tbe mis- : statement should have appeared, aa it will j probably act as a deterrent on any future occasion upon those who, whilst moving outside of the society, are always ready to assist thoße who are lees fortunate than themselves.— l am, &c, ROBERT WINTER. [Per Pbeßß Association.] WELLINGTON, August 13. At present 177 orders have been issued to applicants for employment on the works. Of these there are 112 married men and 65 single. The ages of the applicants range from seventeen to seventy-four, and the list comprises men of nearly all nationalities. The number taken on practically exhausts the list 'of unemployed now in the city, and no more can be put on the present work. It is useless for any to apply unless in caseß of extreme hardship. Men in the country are specially warned not to come into town, as no application- can be considered unless accompanied by authentic proof that the applicant has been rosident in Wellington for the last three months. DUNEDIN, August 18. The unemployed relief works have now been in operation nine weeks, and a sum of over £2800 has been paid in wages. In the first week seventy-nine men were employed. On the ninth week 403 were employed, and £369 143 8d paid in wages. The actual number of applicants for work is 950.
