Thb Unemployed. — Oa Saturday the Mayor of Chiistchuroh received from Mr . B. Winter a cheque for £35, being the amount subscribed by members of the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Sooiety of Bail way Servants to tho Winter Work Fund. Gospel Tbmfbrancb Society. — The Eev Mr Wright, of Lincoln, delivered an address in the Orange Hall, Sonthbridge, on Wednesday evening, to a large audience. The chair was occupied by Mr JR. C. Burns, President of the Sooiety. At the close of the address the Rev J. Macki* proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer. Social Gathering at Sottthbridge.— On Friday evening the .Druids belonging to the Old Oak Lodge, No. 16, held a very successful gathering. The Town Hall was tastefully decorated. Music yjus supplied by Mr Free'e band, and the catering was done by Mr W. Hibbord. Mr E. Cowan acted SB M.C. Daring the evening- several songs were sung. Sxtpbbmk Court. — The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court were opened this morning, before hia Honor Mr Justice Denniston. Robert Carlyle, found guilty of housebreaking, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. James Reid, aliaa Burns, charged with 'having broken into the muaeum and stolen a quantity of gold and other specimens, was acquitted. Southbridgb Town Board. •*- The monthly meeting of thiß Board waß held , on Thntsday evening; present— Messrs B. Webster (in the chair), R. C. Burns, John Kilbride, James Kil bride, Paddy and Slater. The Treasury, Wellington, advised payment of .£lB 17a as subsidy. A petition from owners and occupiers of land along St John Street, asking the Board to shingle the street was held over for more settled weather. The chairman suggested that the Hall Committee should be empowered to take etaps to improve the lighting. The clerk was instructed to collect the amount owing by the Licensing Committee on account of licensing fees. Aecountß amounting to J832 14s 9d were passed for payment. Knights of Labour.— The ordinary meeting of the Rawhiti Assembly was held on Wednesday last, the Master Workman presiding. After some routine business had been transacted and one candidate admitted, correspondence was read, amongst which, was a letter from the Brookley Co-operative Coal Mining Company, advocating the laying of a line from Glentunnel to a point near the coal tips ; also, from the Dunedin Assembly, urging the establishment of a fund for the gratuitous distribution of literature calculated to educate the workers to a just recognition of their rights. Accompanying the latter was a parcel of pamphlets containing Fabian traota and cognate matter. It was resolved to defer discussion thereon until nexb meeting. Mb Fbedbbio Villiebs.— Thia distinguished war artist and correspondent arrived from Timaru yesterday with Mr Hugo Fischer, representative of Mr B. S. Smythe, and will give his first lecture, with limelight illustrations of hiß war pictures, at the Theatre Royal to-morrow evening. The report of an interview with Mr Villieis appears elsewhere. This is Mr Villiers' second visit to Christchuroh, his first having been paid some sixteen years ago, when he was on his way to the Sydney Exhibition. Fibs. — About half-past five o'clock on Saturday night a fire broke ont in a house occupied by Mr G. Handley in Martin Street. A daughter of Mr Handley's was looking for something near a window with a lighted candle when the curtains caught fire. An alarm was at once given, and the brigades, with their plant, promptly turned out, but their services were not required, the fire having been pnt out just as they arrived. Very little damage was done. There was no insurance on the house or furniture.
