Educational Conference.

« [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 9. At the Educational Conference to-day Mr Mills (Marlborough) moved a resolution, the effect being to ask the Minister to alter the Act bo as to do away with the friction between boards and committees regarding the appointment of teachers. A long diseuosion ensued. The majority of members, whilst agreeing that the present procedure was unsatisfactory, declined to vote for tbe motion, because they considered that it would place too much power in the hands |of committees. The motion was lost. Mr Macgregor (Otago) moved to the effect that the Boards should be elected by the electors of the colony, and that the Minister should be asked to amend the Aot in that direction. The motion was lost on the casting vote of the Chairman. | A motion by Dr Newman (Wellington) in favour of a national system of decimal notation was agreed to. On' tbe motion of Mr Udy (Auckland) it was resolved to ask the Minister to amend the Act to enable Boards to establish central schools for children after passing the fifth standard, with a view to gire children more practical instruction than waa afforded by the present schools. The usual compliment to tho Chairman terminated the labours of the Conference.
