Victorian Retrenchment.
♦ — [Speciat to Pbess Association.] MELBOURNE, August 1. The Treasurer announced that the expenditure for the current year will be •£3OO,OOOIeas than last year, chiefly the 'result of retrenchment, which had now attained about as low a level as was possible. During the last twelve months he said that 1126 Civil servants bad been retrenched or dismissed, resulting in a 1 saving of over J8158.000 per annum in salaries. It was not intended to make any more dismissals, but to wait for resignations and retirements. About 300 vacancies would, he thought, occur this year, none of which it would be necessary to fill. He has no intention and sees no necessity of borrowing at present, either in London or locally, though the Government still has parliamentary authority to borrow £5,550,000 sterling. Further, he says, there is no need for further taxation.
