HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
Thursday, August 1. AFTERNOON SITTING. The House met at 2.30 p.m. FINANCIAL DEBATE. The Hon B. J. Seddon informed the House that in accordance with the agreement made with Captain Eussell, the leader of the Opposition, the debate on the Financial Statement would be commenced on Tuesday night next. LOCAL BILLS. The Auckland Harbour Board and Davonport Borough Exchange of Land Bill, Hawkeebury Borough Council Bill, Otago Dock Act Amendment Bill, Timaru Eeserves Bill and Wellington City and Suburbs Water-supply Bill were committed, read a third time and passed. The Wellington City Streets Bill was . committed. After a lengthy discussion the Hon E. J. Ssddon moved that progress should be ; reported on the Bill, with a view to consider certain amendments. Mr Duthie objected to progress being reported,' as it would endanger the passage of the Bill. The Hon E. J". Sbddok objected to the Bill as being retrospective, by declaring that righta-of-way 40 feet wide may be declared public streets. After further debate the Hon E. J. Seddon withdrew the motion to report progress, and moved that the Chairman leave the chair, in order to test the question whether Btreets in future are to be 66 feet wide. The motion for leaving the chair was carried by 38 to 18; and the Bill thrown out. The Hon W. J. Steward moved the second reading of the Waimate Municipal Eeaerves Bill. Agreed to. The Bill was committed, read a third time and paßsed. The House rose at 5.30 p.m.
