At a meeting of the City Council tonight the Mayor drew attention to the BBW duty of 20 per cent ad valorem on gasometers and gas appliances. Ho said that the Council would have shortly to import a new gasometer, which would cost from J615,000 to £20.000. The duty would come to .About £2000. That seemed an enormous tax on a public body, and at his suggestion it was agreed to communicate with the Government and the local members, urging that local bodies who erected their own gasworks Bhould be exempt from the tax. A Dunedin telegram says :— Messrs Eeid and Gray complain of the duty on threahing maohines, and point out that they cannot be made in the colonies for years. They already cost £500 laid down. The only result of the duty will be that farmers will be charged higher ratea for threshing.
