— — — o £bY TUSeOCK IN " CANTEBBUBY TIMES.]" Though the snow has vanished from the elains, it is thawing very slowly on the hills, even on the sunny faces. The most palpably absurd reports are brought in by chance travellers of losses of sheep, and in the absence of definite nem from the back country rues it is beat to say nothing about the extent of the mortality, if urther than that it must be heavy. From a correspondent at the Sydney Shoep Fair, who siirns himself " Wanderer," I hava reoeived som>s interesting notes. His remarks upon the show coincide with tho3» of the correspondent whom I quoted last week, and need not be repeated further than that he notes the success of medinm-wcollad sheep in the merino sections, both the grand championships going to sheep bred by Mr 8. M'Caughey, Co nong, and having a Btrong strain of the Vermont. In the fine wool section, Mr W. Gibson's Scone stud supplied the winners for rams over and under two and a half years. The younger animal was, per hap », aB fino ft tp?cimen as the ■ celebrated stud has yet exhibited, at any '• rate in Sydney. Queensland breeders are now paying closer attention to the raising of good stock, and both at the show and .sales some good results were scored. Regarding the sales "Wanderer" saye; —"To Messrs Goldsbrougb, Mort and Co., curiously foil the pride of poaition in dealing with both merinos and longwools, ' and they opened their sale on July 3 with a ohoice draft of the famous * Sir Thomaa * Hook, belonging to the Hon James Gibson, 'of Tasmania. A fine ram, Paradox IL, by Paradox, by champion Golden Horn IL, was the first offered, and realised the highest figure of the Bale so far, being purchased for the Tubbo Estate Company, New South Wales, for 150gs. A son of Paradox 11., next offered, realised 65g_, • and. the third ram on tho list, Dense Golden Horn IL, fetched 50gs. Thus well the sale started. The buyers were active with their bids, and although the prices were not large, a healthy tone was manifested, auguring well for the success of these, the largest sales yet held here. The Tasmanian stock sent forward by those excellent, I might almost say unequalled, merino breeders, the Gibjon family, was the subject of lively com- ' petition between eager purohasers. " The Belle Vue line of sixteen rams, including Paradox 11., on account of the ' Hon James Gibson, averaged £Z4 17a ; while Meßsrs W. Gibson and Son, with the ' oelebrated Scone stock, netted JC625, or an average of .£25. Mr Thomas Gibson,} of Eakvale, with a fine collection, received j J8666, or an average of i>3s ,* this prime j lot included a special stud ram, Beady Cash, which realised 105gs. "The postponement of the Haurofco'a sailing enables me to say a word about Friday's catalogue offered by Messrs Hill, •- Clark ahd Co. The collection was small bnt good, although prices .again ruled in buyers favour. Tho titbit of the sale was the well-known Collaroy lot. A grand '" two-year-old ram, by Green Mountain, ran up to 260g8, at which prico he fell to the nod of Mr J. Jones, of Merrigal Station, New South Wales. Green Mountain was & Vermont imported by the Collaroy Co. at a coßt of SBogs. The Company's parcel of fifteen rams netted J8751 163, or an average of .£SO 2s 6d. "Though a strict time limit of one and a quarter minutes for each lot is enforced, ib will be Tuesday before the longwools, in which New Zealand iB chiefly interested, are reached. I hope in my next to report upon that department of the Bale, but may say that there is a belief that New Zealanders have made a mistake in flooding the market with shipments. The consignments to hand are of good quality; whether those to arrive will discount the position will Boon be known." j Thb Lyceum.— The mombers and friends of the Canterbury Freethought Association held a " musical service" last night ' ia the Lyceum, at which songs, readings and recitations were contributed. Benefit Entertaihmbnt. — To-morrow evet&ng the members of the Alhambra Gaiety Company will take a benefit at the Oddfellows' Hall, Lichfield Street. The: City Brass Band has consented to play J outride the hall. A good programme has been arranged, and aB the members of the | company have had much misfortune, partlyoffing to the very severe weather, ever sinca their arrival here, it is hoped thftj[ there will bo 3 lwgo attendance.
