«. TWO MEN BURNED TO DEATH. [Peb Pbess Association.J PALMERSTON NORTH, Jult 29. The Empire Hotel was burned down between 1 and 2 a.m. Most of the inmates had a narrow escape, and two men were burned to death when attempting to escape. One was named Walker, a hawker recently from Victoria, aged thirty-four. The other was an old man named Maurice Connell. The origin of the fire is unknown. A few minutes afterwards a second fire broke out in the square, destroying the %hops of Harty (fruiterer), where it originated, Haydon (grocer), the offices of Guy and Haggett (solicitors), and the Drainage Board engineer's. Very little was saved. Te Aro House was saved with difficulty by the exertions of the brigade. Insurances— £93o in the London and Lancashire, £550 in the Imperial, £1300 in the Commercial Union, £150 in the National, £100 in the Alliance, and £250 in the New Zealand Office.
