Condition of the Streets.

TO THK BDITOE. Sib, — Al the last ordinary meeting of the City Council (July 15) a motion wbb passed to investigate the condition of Montreal Street. Councillor Connal moved an amendment that the Worka Committee be requested to i aspect all streets, and I was astonished to read in your report that it found no seconder. What the Conncil is doing now is only *' patchy " work here and there. lam of opinion that all the streets want investigating as to their condition. Look at the state the footpaths are in — especially those running east and west on the wintry side. They are in a disgraceful state. What is the City Council thinking about P Why don't they wake np from their lethargy and devise a soheme P It didn't take them long to consider the raising of the rate from lld to ls. I think some of the members have been too long in ; they are out of date. But surejy there ia one of them who is able to devise a scheme to improve the street?. Of course I know it oan't be done for nothing. Let the ratepayers decide for or against such a echeme. The City Council meets to-night, and I hope Councillor Connal will be to the fore again, this time getting the Bupport of the whole Counoil.— l am, &c, RATEPAYER.
