J. Neate being the only person nominated for the vacancy on the Sc Albans Borough Council, waa to-day declared duly elected.

Dutch Auctions. —An extract paragraph has appeared in this and other journals, briefly stating the nature of a Dutch auction, and that no license fee is required. This is incorrect. By the Auctioneers' Act Amendment Act, 1894, every possible kind of auction is made Bubject to the provision for payment of the usual license fee. The penalty for selling by auction without a license may be as much as MOO. .

Eangiora. School Committee. — The monthly meeting was held last evening, Mr E. B:tll in the chair. The Master's report stated that the average attendance had been low during the month, owing chiefly to sickness of various kinds among the children. It was decided to remove a number of pinuo insignus and poplar trees on the south side of the school-ground, with a view of replacing them with ornamental trees, on Arbor Day. Messrs A> B. Blacketb and C. I. Jennings were appointed a Visiting Committee fox the month.

I Oddfbllowship. — The Loyal Volunteer Juvenile Lodge, M.U., held its half -yearly meeting last evening. There was a good attendance of members, and the officers of the Senior Volunteer Lodge were present. The following officers were elected for the eti'suing term : — G.M. Bro W. BnrgeßS, N.G. Bro H. Milne, V.G. Bro J. Grenfell, E.S. Bro F. C. Coopsr. P.G. Bro A. H. Paddy, of the Senior Lodge, presented P.G. JBro Midgloy with an emblem on behalf of the Juvenile Lodge. Sentiments were given by P.G. Bro Midgley, V.G. Bro Greeufel, and Bro Sincock ; and N.G. Bro Patterson responded. •
