Hospital Board.

SOUTH CANTERBURY.

The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board waß held on Tueßday; present— Measrß Jackson (chairman), Gillingham, Talbot, ' Hardie and the Mayors of Timaru and Waimate. Mr Hill, Mayor of Timaru, took his seat on the Board after a long absence through -illness. The Chairman read the allocation of the levies on the local bodies for the year, and the Secretary was instructed to furnish members with a copy of the allocation sheet. Mr Gillingham expressed the opinion that Mackenzie County was being asked for more than its fair share. The total of the levies was .£3032. The Chairman explained that the levy had been increased this year as the deficit last year gave fifteen, months to provide for. At present, after paying the day'B accounts, the overdraft would be £603 odd. Mr Hill moved that the Finance Committee should inquire into the circumBtances of poor patients, and recommend to the Board a fair sum, in view of such circumstances, to be accepted as a final payment. After some discussion the motion was held over till next meeting. Tenders were ordered to be called for j extending the front fence of brick, and erecting gate-poets in stone. At the request of Mr Hall- Jones, M.H.E., it was i agreed to expend part of the balance of the voluntary fund, raised for the Old Men's Home, in placing gaefittingß in certain of the rooms, the Board to supply gas in place of kerosene. It was resolved— "That the Chairman be authorised to accept any contributions that may be raised for the relief of the unemployed, and to apply to the Government for the subsidy thereon ; the circumstances under which such contributions have been raised, and the arrangements for its expenditure, to be supplied when applying for the subsidy/ A quantity of charitable aid business was attended to. Accounts amounting to J8362 9a 5d were passed for pay* ment.
