Christchurch City Rifles.
"Waterloo Night" was celebrated by the Christchurch City Rifles yesterday evening by the annual "social" of the company, which took place in the orderlyroom, whioh was effectively decorated with flags and foliage. Light refreshments were eerved, Mr L. J. Smith catering in a very satisfactory manner. There was a large attendance, and the chair wag occupied by Captain Hobday, who was supported by the lieutenants of the corps, Messrs A. Faicbairn and Cabot. Sergeant Bean was vice-chairman. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Joyce, A. Loughrey, Farrell and Captain Linn, formerly officers of the corps which compose the present company. After the toasts cf the Queen aud the officer commanding the district, Captain Hobday briefly addressed the gathering, alluding to the change of name of the corps from " A Company "to Christchurch City Bifles, the departure of Lieutenant Wolstein to join the Imperial service in India, the adoption of the new uniform (blue with red facings), and other matters. Captain Hobday then presented the prizes won in the shooting competitions last season, as follows : — Company's Champion Belt (held for one year) and gold I star for the highest aggregate in three out of four competitions — Corporal C. W. Jackson with ,168 points, Corporal White's silver medal for the second aggregate—Corporal Sutherland, 163 points. Half a dozen silver spoons, presented by an ex-member, Mr Cameron, for a handicap match— Sergeant Parker, 80 points, from scratch. Queen's Birthday compete ' tions, all from scratch — First class, Mr G. T. White's trophy, Corporal Jackson, 70 points; second class, Coates and Co/a trophy. Corporal Chapman, 63 points; third class, members' trophy, Private Smith, 61 points. Attendance PrizesPossible, 44 attendances, Corporal Sutherland; Privates Harrison and Collins, 43 each; Private O'Connor, 42; Private Tasker, 41; Private Bennel, 38; Privates Cork and A. Dodd, 37 each ; Private F. Dodd, 36; Private Jackson, 34; Private Boxburgh,B2; Private Turvey, 81 ; Private M'Cullagh, 30; Lanoe-corporal Carter, 28. Captain-Hobday proposed the healths of the now lieutenants, to which Messrs Fairbairn and Cabot responded. The health of Captain Hobday was proposed by Sergeant Bean, and in responding the captain impressed on the men the necessity for tboroughneßß in their work. The other toasts were the " Non-commiaßioned Officers,'* and " The Donors of Prizeß." Several good songs were Bung, and a very jovial time spent by aIU
