AUCKLAND, June 13.
Arrangements are being made to "try out" a whale which floated across the Manukau bar and stranded at Huia. It measured 86 feet in length. A sperm whale 70 feet long waa found stranded on the ocean beach at Maraden Point. It ia in good condition.
At a special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, which was attended by the Auckland members of the House of Representatives, a number of resolutions were carried asking for Government assistance with regard to prospecting and the development of deep level mining at the Thames, urging the olaims of the North Island Trunk Railway for completion prior to the conatruction of any other line being undertaken, asking for the opening up by roads of the district nor th of Auckland, and aßkin g for the repeal of the Shppa and Shop Assistants Act as having 1 proved injurious to the -best interests of commerce and of the class it was designed ' to benefit. Mr J. C. Firth referred in complimentary terms to the work which the Hon J. G. Ward had accomplished during his visit to London, and urged that he should be officially received by the Chairman on behalf of the Chamber on his return. Mr Geddes said he was not prepared to express his thanks to Mr Ward, because that gentleman had added a few millions to the debt of the colony. < •
