COUNTRY NEWS.

Cheviot. — Tenders are invited for the erectiou of a post office in the M'Kenzie township, Cheviot. Tenders close on June 21.

Political,— Mr J. M'Lachlan, M.H.E. for Aahburtcn, wili address his constituents ab the Town Hall, Bakaia, at eight o'clock this evening.

Quoits. — Tho third match between teams from Temuka and Geraldine came off on Thursday afternoon at Temuka, and resulted in a win for Geraldine by 27 points, Geraldine thus winning two matches out of throe.

Ashburton Model Yacht Clue. — The fourth beat for Mr Murray's trophy was sailed on Thureday afternoon, resulting in a win for the Bluebell, with Fairy Queen Becond and Fleetwing third. Five boats started.

Prohibition. — A prohibition meeting was held ia tho Bible Christian Church, Little River, on Monday evening, June 3. The Rev Mr Stevens presided. There was a moderate attendance. Addresses ware delivered by Messrs Taylor, Wake and the Chairman.

The Rabbit Nuisance. — A meeting of thos9 interested in preventing the further spread of rabbita in South Canterbury will be held at the Levels County Council Chambers on June 15, at 11.30 a.m., when the report of the Commissioners appointed at tho laat meeting to consider the question of rabbit-proof fences will be received.

Loburn Presbyterian Church. — At a meeting of members and adherents of thia church, held on Wednesday evening, to consider the position of affairs in connection with tho redistribution of the Sefton charge, it was deoided not to follow the example of the Ashley congregation in boycotting their church, but to attend the services under protest.

" Inglesidbs." — The Ashburton Caledonian Society held a most pleasant " in«leßido " on Thursday night in the Oddfellows' Hall. There was a very large attendance. Mrs Donald M'Lean played eeveral piano selections during tho evening, and etep dances, song. 3 , _.c, were given. — The Temuka Caledonian Society held its first " ingleside" of the season in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Thursday evoking. The attendance showed a falling off from foimer years, some thirty-five couples only being present. The room was very prettily decorated.

Ashbueton f hkss t LOB.— ne annual meeting of this club was held in Mr G. F. Dodde'a rooms, Burnett Street, on Thursday evening. There was a fair attendance. Several chess players sent in their names as being willing to join the club should regular sessions be resumed. It was decided to hold a tourney under the sealed handicap system. Messrs Dodds and Willis wereappointedhandicappers. The entrance money for the tournament, with a guinea added, is to bo devoted to the purchase of a trophy for the winner.

A School Committee's Difficulty.— ■ At a. meeting cf the Little Biver School Committee held on Monday evening, it was reported that the Native sohool was about to ba enlarged, and that the extra accommodation required was for the purpose of attraotingchildren from the Board school. After considerable discussion, a resolution was passed to the effect that aa the present Native school bnilding contained ample room for the Maoris, the committee strongly protested against the building being enlarged for the purpose of accommodating European children. It was resolved that a copy of the resolution Bhould be forwarded to the Minister of Education.

Mutual Improvement.— At the usual' weekly meeting of the Kaiapoi Weeleyan Mutual Improvement Association on Thursday evening, the Rev J. S. Smalley presided. Miss Alley read a paper on '* Individualism Versus Co - operation," which waß commented upon by several of thoae present, and Miss Alley 7 replied.-— A "social" in connection with the Bible and Mutual Improvement Class at Woodend was held on Wednesday evening, there being a large attendance of members and friends. ' Music, readings, recitations and games were indulged in, and a very pleasant evening was spent.

Morris- tube Shooting. — The Bangiora Club fired off the final for Mra Hay'a trophy on Thursday evening, when the highest scorer was B. d'Auvergne (ocr) 34, and each of the following made 33 :— W. Efford, jun. (6) ; J. Wearn, sen. (3) ; J. Wilson '(3); W. Blackett (3); B. Cook (2) ; W. Efford, sen. (3) ; C. d'Auvergno, C. Fraser and A. Tyler (1) ; J. Sansom (2) ; A. Payne and J. Parker (3). The cup waa taken for the oeason by B. d'Auvergne with an aggregate for four competitions of 133. A. Payne came second with 132, and C. d'Auvergne, C. Fraßer, J. Sansom and B. Cook each scored 131. Messrs G. Jones and W. dv Moulin offered trophies as first and second prizes, to be fired for in three competitions, tho two highest scores in each to count. It wbb decided to purohase two Martini-Henry tubes.

Little Biver. — The United Club'a "social" and danc9 took place at the Maori Hall on Tuesday evening. The hall was prettily decorated for the occasion, and the emblems of the various clubs were appropriately displayed. During the evening Bongs were contributed by Mesdames Fisher and Wright, Misses Buchanan and Morrow and Messrs Fuller and J. Coop. Mr W. H. "Montgomery referred to the work of the Boating, Tennis, Cricket and Bifle Clubß during the past season, and distributed the trophies won to the successful competitors as follows : — Boating, Messrs Wi and A. Beed, W. Chapman and H. M'.Gloin; tennis, Misses M. Sefton and M. Greenland and Messrs E. P. Bean and P. Joblin. Liberal refreshments were provided by Mr Freeman. The dance muaic was played by Mr Hayfield, and the duties of M.C. were 'performed by Mr Joseph Beynolds.

Valedictory.— On Wednesday evening a pleasant evening was spent at Mr Marshall's Marideville Hotel, Kaiapoi, the occasion being to wish Mr Smifaert God-speed on his journey to the Old Country. During the last few months Mr Smibert has been acting in tbe capacity of designer for the Kaiapoi Woollen Company. A very enjoyable time was spent by those present, several contributing songs, &c. During an interval Mr John Simpson, in a few well-chosen remarks, presented the guest of the evening with a purse of sovereigns subscribed by some of 'his friends as a sign of the respect and esteem in which he was held.— Oa Thursday evening a complimentary "social" was tendered by the footballers of Kaiapoi to Mr W. H. Moir, who is about to remove from Kaiapoi for a time. About seventy guests assembled in the drill hall, which had been tastefully adorned with evergreens, flags, &c. Dancing was the order of the evening, and was kept np to the music of piano (Mr Bennetts) and cornet (Mr Hoskins).
