SOME INTERRUPTED ORATIONS.
Never, perhaps, was orator more die. concerted than was a local magnate during the municipal elections of last November.
He was speaking in a north country town to a teeming audience, when suddenly a breathless man approached him from the back of the platform, and Whispered lh his ear, the intelligence conveyed evidently being of the gravest kind, for the orator paused and turned pale. Then he faced the audience again, and said : —
" We must all, I repeat, safeguard our interests, natural and otherwise . bnt lam sorry to say that I oannot say more oo this head, as my house is on fire and I must be off," and he rushed from the platform..
This reminds one of the story told of the eccentrio Colonel Sibthorpe, the wellknown M.P. for Lincoln. He was speaking on one occasion, when a wag passed bim a note, Baying that his back coat pocket was smouldering. The colonel was not in the least put out, but said—
"I tun told that my coat ia on fire behind, but that doesn't matter ; I mean to make things very hot all round before I've done."
