CHEVIOT.
The Cheviot County Council met at the ' Land Office, M'Kenzie, on Saturday last ; present— Messrs J. Gibson (chairman), G. ' W. Forbes, A. W. Butherford, W. Macfarlane, P. T. Gell and B.C. Smith. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary, informing the Council that the * County of Cheviot had been declared a j Special District under the Auctioneers' Act by an Order-in-Council dated May 6, ' 1895, and that the County Clerk had been ' appointed licensing' officer thereof. AJ letter waß read from Mr Meredith, j M.H.E., with regard to the gravelling of : roads on Cheviot and of streets in I M'Kenzie and the clearing of the Jed. It ' was announced that the amounts allocated . to the Cheviot county for the maintenance j of hospitals, and of charitable institutions : other than hospitals, were _8104 12s and '' .£llO 7s Id respectively. The Clerk was in- : structed to acknowledge Mr Meredith's ' letter, and to write to the Beceiver of Land ' Bevenne, Nelson, .informing him that the j Cheviot County Counoil was of opinion ! that the County had a claim to the whole ! of the "thirds" accruing from perpetual ' loaaes at the Conway Village Settlement, * that settlement being within the County { of Cheviot. It was reßolved— - " That the ; Cheviot County Council give its support > at the proper time to the committee j appointed by the ratepayers of Stratford ! (Taranaki) for the purpose of making ah adjustment in the Valuation Act, by exempting all improvements on the land from taxation." The Clerk waa instructed to make inquiries as to a suitable locality for a pound. The valuer was granted two months' extension of time for completing the roll. The meeting then terminated.
