Th© ton 9 of Mr JReid's message •with reference to the Governorship of New South Wales has surprised the Colonial Office. Sir Saul Samuel, the Agent- General, ia awaiting Lord : Eipon's reply to the message. i- ; It is believed that Lord Ripon will y ; not .appoint the Governor of New s South Wales, pending an assurance \ thab the salary wiil not be touched. Colonists generally condemn the toue of Mr Reid's telegram. SYDNEY, Mat 30. j In the Assembly Sir G. E. Dibbß said j the Premier's cable about the Governorship waa too contemptible ond idiotic to be noticed. He did not understand the relative positions of England pnd the colonieß. The financial debute ia expected to finish to-day. It ia understood that the case with reference to the validity of the payment of members of the Legislative Council will be taken to the Privy Council. In the House thi3 afternoon, Sir H. - ' Parkes moved the adjournment in order to ' call attention to the cable sent Home by Mr Keid with regard to the Governorship. *g- The massage, Sir H. Parkes said, would / w c»uae the colony to become a laughingly '• Stock at Home. A hot dobate ensued, the *■ Premier coming in for some warm criticism '-■ cism from his opponents.
