H.M.S. Pylades has arrived from Auckland, via Tauranga. She stays until June 4, and then goes to Ly ttelton.
.It iB improbable that the Government will grant any prospecting license in the Uriwera Country until in a position to deal with the country as a goldfield. At the City Council to-night a deputation from the Scenery Preservation Society attended, and urged the removal of the shelter sheds at the approach to the wharf, over which there has been a good deal of controversy lately. The question was referred to the Reserves Committee. A motion for establishing a city market, and also one for having a paid permanent fire brigade, the cost to be defrayed by the Corporation, the Fire Insurance Companies, and the Government were likewise referred to committees. A proposal to level the hilla behind Wellington terrace for a recreation ground was withdrawn. A young woman named Madge Robinson, formerly a barmaid, threw herself into the harbour to-night, but was rescued, and will be charged with attempting suicide.
