WORK AND WAGES.

[PEB PbSSS ABBOCIATION.I DUNEDIN, Mat 22. Representations have been made to the Mayor and Mr Pinker ton, M.H.8., that there are 250 unemployed in Dunedin at present. Mr Fish promised to cotnmuni- . cate with the Minister of Public Works , immediately.

, It was reported yesterday that a strike I had taken place among the employes of ; Messrs H. Bayner and Sone, boot maunfac- : turers. According to the statement of the ! firm, an intimation was made to the employes that owing to the Blackness of trade it would be neceaeary to place them on half-time for a week or a fortnight, and that with the exception of one man they then left the shop in a body. The Secretary of the Bootmakers' Union states that there is no strike of Mr Bayner's em* ployed. The employes, it seems, are members of the Union, and cannot go out on strike unless authorised by the Union. The executive of the Union knew nothing of the trouble till a notice appeared in this morning's paper. The men's version of the affair is . that they have, worked only seven full weeks Bince Christmas, and that Mr Bayner gave " them notice yesterday that they would be put on half-time. As Mr Riyner had a certain order to fulfil, the men allege that they bad a right to work fnll time till that order was completed. If Mr Bayner had no work they were willing to £0 off. They took a whole holiday yesterday aB a protest against Mr Eayner's action in putting them on half-time, and Intended resuming work thin morning, but were paid off directly they finished the work they had in hand.
