THE CITY RATE COLLECTOR.
BROUGHT BEFORE THE COURT,
At the Police Court, this morning, before Mr F. Trent, J.P., and Mr H. Toomer, J.P., John Turner Heard was charged with havins stolen, on Jan. 9, the sum of i £22 19a 2d, the moneys of the m-iyor, ; councillors and burpesßes of the City of I Christchurch. Mr Meares appeared for ; the accused. Mr Stringer appeared for ] the prosecution, and applied for a remand. The accused was remanded till Tuesday j next. Mr Meares applied for bail. Mr i Stringer did not object to bail being granted, but asked that it might be ma.de substantial as, although the charge ogainsf. : the accused was only one of about £20, j the deficiencies were very much greater.
Bail was allowed, the accused in hi* own recognisance of JBIOO, and two sureties of .£SO each.
