CANTERBURY ROWING CLUB
There was a large attendance of members at the Canterbury Bowing Club's annual smoke concert and presentation of prizes at the boathouee last evening. Mr B. D. Thomas (vice-president) occupied the chair, and presented the prizes won during the year. The winners were as follow: — Maiden Foure, Christchurch Eegatta— Meaars F. I. Cowlishaw, E. A, Bobinßcn, G. W. Humphreys and E. F. Nicoll ; President's Cup— Messrs F. R. Deveaux, N. L. Macbeth, C. S. Hawkes and W. E. Stycbej Club Fours— Messrs L, W. A ppleby, E. F. Nicpli; H. Fioat arid F. Pouiton; Scratch Fours (dead heat)—^ Messrs F. L Cowlishaw, E. F. JiTicbll, H. Frost and T* Co wliehaw and Messrs F.W. Hobbs, F. W. Dunnage, C.tS;- Hawkes and. L. J. Hobbs; Club Pairs, Messrs C. Hewer and J. Lawrence; Club Double Sculls, Messrs C. S. Hawkes and W. J. Smith ; Trial Fairs, Messrs E. A. Bobinson and T. Cewlishaw; coxswain's .prizes, steering H. Harper, conduct B. C. Taylor, attendance Archie Mitchell, Albert Mitchell and A. Thomson. Among the toasts honoured weVe :— ■•• Kindred Bowing Clube," proposed by Mr A. F. N. Blakiston and replied to by Messrs F. D. Kesteven (Union) and H. Bowlker (Avon); "The Prize-winners," proposed by Mr J. R. Evans and acknowledged by Messrs F. I. Cowlishaw and L. W. Appleby.. The Chairman, in proposing the toast of " The Captain of the Club," stated that Mr Nicoll would leave for Asbburton in a few days, and the club would lose a hard-working and valuable officer. Mr Nicoll, during the time he had been connected with the club, had won the respect and esteem of his club-mates and, on their behalf, he (the Chairman) had much pleasure in presenting Mr Nicoll with an oak inkstand mounted in silver, bb a token of the members' appreciation of his services. Mr Nicoll's health was drunk with musical honours, and that gentleman suitably responded. The Chairman stated that a group-photograph of the officers of the club' and an address would be presented to Mr Nicoli in a few days. . The evening was enlivened .with Eoma capital songs, recitations and instrumental items. Mr H. Fleming played the accompaniments.
