A FEARFUL OCCURRENCE.

MELBOURNE, Apeii. 13.
A terrible accident occurred in an air chamber on a section of the Hoboon's Bay main sewerage works last night. Six men were working in the chamber when suddenly the water burst in. Mr Watson, the engineer, was about to enter the chamber when a man named Burke, who was inside, pnahed him back and shut the door in his face. Looking through the glass in the door, Mr Watson saw the water rißing. Burkes action was that of a hero. Apparently he saw that there was no chance for himself ofc the others in the chamber, and he closed the door in order to save the lives of those in the tunnel. The names of the drowned are — Buchanan, oivil engineer; Burke, boss of the shift; Johnson, Gabriel Jackson and Foster. None of the bodies have yet been recovered.

Last evening Herbert Mnllins, aged fourteen yeara, fell into the river while playing with other boya and was drowned. The body haa not been recovered. WELLINGTON, Ap«it 13. He sustained concussion of the brain, and died this morning, MISSING MEN. i DUNEDIN, Apkil 18. Joseph Drake, John Driver amt Peter Lawson left Port Chalmers on March 28 in an open whaleboat for the Nuggets, on a fishing expedition. They arrived all right, and left last Saturday for the Port, but have not been heard of since. A south' west gale was blowing on Saturday. Drake is a married man belonging to Purakanui. The other men are supposed to be single. The three missing fishermen are reported to have returned to the NHggets. ! '
A young man named John Raven was admitted to the hospital yesterday afternoon Buffering from an injury to one of his lips, sustained through colliding with a trap at Linooln. A man named W. Blowett fell off a ladder on Thursday and injured his spine. He was admitted to the hospital. At; Tipapa Station, on Wednesday, ah elderly man named Jamea Wattie died very suddenly. A boy named George Cogoar, eleven years of age, an inmate of Barnham Industrial School, was brought to Chriatchurch by train on Thursday morning, suffering from & broken leg, and was taken to the hospital in the police van. It appears that fhe lad was wrestling with another boy, when his legs became entangled and he fell on a stone, ; sustaining a fracture of the left; leg above | the kneo. Oa Wednesday, forenoon an old man named James Wattle died suddenly ab the I residence of hia soa-in-lnw, Mr M. Cook, !on Mr Acton Adams' farm, Tipapa. Tho L remains were conveyed to Amberley, ■ where an inquest was held at the Crown Hotel before Mr A. Greig, J.P., acting m coroner. Dr Fitzhenry, who had made n post-mortem examination, deposed that I death was due to failure of the heart's action, and the jury returned a verdict accordingly. The deceased, who was in his sigfkty-tliird year, nncl a native of Aberdeen shire, was a very old resident in North Canterbury, having arrived in the colony with. hiß wife and family by the Dhip Jura in the early pait of 1858. In the later sixties he was well known by travellers on the North road, as ha kept an accommodation house .at what was then known as Brown's Bridge — about a mile ! beyond Amberley. Hia wife pre-deceased ; him about four yearo, and he leaves & ; family of three eons and three daughters. j About five o'clock on Thursday evening, j a man named Jamea Dempsey, fifty-sis years of age, died suddenly at Merivale. The deceased wa» employed by Mrs Studholme aa gardener, and lived at Aikman's j Road, Papanui. On Thursday afternoon : he was engaged felling a tree on Mra Studholme's property, when he asked a lad ; named Claude Dunford to go into the | house for some milk. After drinking a ■ little he complained that il was aour, and ■ that he felt Bick. Directly afterwards ho leaned againsb the tree and fell down dead. An inquest was held at the side Eohool, St Albtma, at 9.15 a.m. to-day, before Mr R. Beeth&m, coroner, and a . jury of whom Mr Henry Daiby Carter was : chosen foreman. After hearing the cvii dence, the jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased died from the rupture of a blood vosßel.
