FOOTBALL.

A meeting of tbe Referees' Association waa held in the Clarendon Hotel last evening. Mr F. T. Evanß was voted to the chair. Mr W. Soper was re-elected secretary.

The following definitions were agreed to:— A tackle ,iß when tho holder of the ball is held by one or more players of the opposite side in Bnch a way that- his progress is stopped. . Knooking on—Definition to be read strictly. Throwing forward— lf a ball be thrown parallel to the goal-line, and after striking the ground bound forward, it shall not be considered a throw forward. Pair catch— The word direct is taken to mean that the ball must be caught clear .at the firat attempt. When the player claiming a fair catch is charged before being able to make his mark a fair catch shall, nevertheless, be' allowed.

The following additions to various laws were agreed to :— Law 7. When the ball is heeled back out. of the scrummage and kioked in again by any player of tho same Bide who ia clear of the scrummage that player's forwards are immediately placed off-side. Law G, Section F. The players are to put the ball ia the scrummage, and the referee, if necessary, decides which side shall put the ball in. Section H. When tha ball is ia the scrummage every player who is in front of a line drawn through the ' scrummage at right angles to the touoh-line, is obstructing the half-backs' play. Law 3 (c). Every player ordered off the field, even for a first offeree, shall be at once reported to the Union by the referee. (g) Add " But, if it can be avoided, the game shall never be stopped until the ball i 9 dead."

111. 6. The words "at once" must, on appeal, be Btrictly read. The new case law was understood to mean that a try mußb be scored at the spot where the ball is firet grounded by the attaoking side. ■
