South Canterbury Education Board.

o The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held yesterday ; preßent — Eovs G. Barclay and J. White. Messrs W. B. Howell, J.;Jackpon, M. Gray, J. Talbot, S. H. Graham and T. R. Seddon. Mr Jackson was elected [ chairman by five votes to three. Mr Barclay moved, pursuant to notice— "That the request of the authorities of the Catholic Church that their schools should be examined by the Board's inspector, be acceded to subject to Buch conditions as the Board may now or at any future time consider necessary." Mr Barclay said that nearly 10 per cent of the children at school in the colony wera in the Catholic schools, and it was the duty of the State to obtain some guarantee that the education which these 12,000 children were receiving was sufficient. Mr Howell seconded the motion. A discussion ensued, after which Mr Barclay altered his motion to read that the request be acceded to, " subject to the Government regulations," and it was then carried, five members voting for it. Messrs Barclay and Howell were appointed a committee to assist in making the necessary arrangements for carrying out the resolution. Mr Talbot moved tnat the Board of Governors of the Waime-te High School should be requested to reconsider their refusal to make a larger contribution towards the support of the District High School, and also that ; the Wai mate School Committee should be informed that if the Board o£ Governors did not make a larger contribution, the Board would feel ii self under the necessity of disrating the Bchool. After a long diecußeion, an amendment was carried appointing a deputation to confer with the Waimite Governors on the subject. The Boara'd annual report showed, that there were sixty-two. schools in operation, and three more in course of erection. The roll number at the. end of the year was 5189, an increase of 39 during the year. The building account was £263 Ida lid in credit, but with liabilities of .81045 16s 6d, and there urgent works intended to be carried out to the amount of .£6OO. The maintenance account was in credit £1472 8a 6d. A number of appointments were made, all being transfers of teachers already in the Board'o employment.
