BANKRUPTCY.

— ♦ J. T. WHITFORD, LYTTELTON. The first meeting of creditors in the estate of J. T. Whitford, bootmaker, of Lyttelton, waß'held this morning. There were five creditors present, and Mr F. W. Johnston appeared . on behalf of the debtor. ■ The bankrupt's statement showed unsecured oreditors to the amount of £479 Is lOd. The assets were estimated to be worth £370 7s 6d, including stock-in-trade valued at £192 Is O&d, book debts, &c, estimated to produce £160, and cash in hand £18 15s 6d. The deficiency wa9 £108 14s 4d. There were twentythree unsecured creditors, those for amounts of over £5 being : -— Skelton, Frostick and Co. £224 3s 9d, C. D. Lightband £24 17b, H. Pannell £37 Is 3d, H. Duckworth £18, Gavin, Gibßon and Co. £34 13s 3d, T. Auptin £20, Petereon and Co. £8, M. O'Brien and Co. £10 2b, T. P. Slinn (Wellington) £22 7s 4d, S. Anderson (Timaru) £35. The debtor stated that he had gone into business without capital, and had done fairly well until lately, when the business of the port ha,d fallen off. He had filed at the request of his oreditora. Mr Frostick objected to the debtor being represented by a solicitor. There had been a private meeting of creditors, at which they had agreed to accept the bankrupt's position, and it was only adding costa to the estate to have a solicitor present. He objected, not no much in the present case but aa s matter of principle. A resolution was passed, authorising the calling for tenders for the stock, and the. estate waa left; in the hands of the Official Assignee.
