THE WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIP. The Sydenham Amateur Swimming Club was very unfortunate in having Had weather for its annual races, which were brought off in the Lancaster Park bath on Saturday afternoon. The water was very cold, and several competitors who had entered for ihe inter-club events declined to start. A very good programme had been prepared. The Water Polo Championship of New Zealand was the principal attraction, and despite the fact that there were no competitors outside Canterbury the three games played were productive of some clever play, and the interest was Bustaiaod throughout. The Christchurch team beat Eichmond by six goals to nil in tho final round, thus winning the New Zealand Swimming Association's banner four years in succession. W. H. Thomas, a promising young junior of the Eichmond Club, won the Inter-Club Ladies' Bracelet; and C. Kent, of tho Sydenham Club, annexed the Inter-Club Autumn Handicap. Mr W. B. Eyre, who acted as starter, gave general srtisfaction, and the decisions of Mr P. T.Evans, the referee in the Polo Championship, were well received by the four teams. Tho other officials discharged their duties satisfactorily, and the events wera got off punctually. The following are details r— Water Polo Championship of New Zea- j laid ; the members of tho winning team j to receive gold medals.-— First round : Richmond (black and white) — - A. S. The play remained in the centre for a short time until the Richmond forwards got on a rush, and Simpson scored the first goal. On resuming the Sydenham forwards worked the ball into Richmond territory, and Kent and Cotterill each had a fchot at goal, but Andrews was successful in preventing a score. The play thon became much faster, and some exceedingly good work was put in by both teams, Allen scoring, for Richmond and Bell and Cameron for Sydenham. Just before the call of time Allen soored the winning goal for Richmond, and the match ended — Richmond three goals, Sydenham two. Christchurch (scarlet and white) — 0. On resuming, Halttday scored the seoond goal for Christchurch, and a little later had another shot, the ball hitting tho bar and rolling over. Halliday secured the ball, and, taking a long shot, scored another goal.- Time was shortly afterwards called, with the score — Christchurch three goals, East Christchurch nil. Final Round: Christchurch v. Richmond—For a brief period the ball wbb in the Chrietohurch half, and Allen had a shot, the ball juet going over the bar.
