AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. [Special to the " Sx-ar." I NAPIER, Feb. 25. The visiting athletes and cyclists were taken for a drive in the country yesterday by the Hawke's Bay Amateur Athletic Club and the Wanderers' Bicycle Club. The outing proved mosb enjoyable. The party was shown over the Tomoana freezing works, and the Hon J7 D. Ormond'a stables at Karatnu, and was hospitably received by Captain and Mrs Russell at Flaxmere. In the afternoon the Omaha Pa was also visited. Mr H. Williams entertained the party at Aabridge. The Auckland Athletic team left for Auckland in the evening. This morning the Wellington, Wanganui and Manawatu teams, and some members of the Canter* bury team left for their homes. The Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association's banner has been won by Canterbury representatives three times, by Auckland twice and Wellington dnce. F. S. Harley, C. F. Smith, P. J. Brown and probably J. Moir will compete at the Wellington Club's sports on Saturday next. The weather is beautiful to-day. The track at the Eecreation Ground is in splendid order for the One-mile and Twenty-fi veniile Bicycle Championships. • H. J. Pither, Canterbury, should win both events, with W. J. S. Hayw&rd, Canterbury, oi6S6 ' attendant and Eeynolda t Auckland, nest, [Per Pbess Association.] The weather is fine to-day* with a light breeze. The chief event is, of course, the Twenty-five Mile Bicyole Bace, which ia set down for 5 p.m., while the Mile Bicycle Eace ia run an hour earlier. Beynolda is thought, to be a moral for the mile, and Pither should win the longer distance. Moßfc ! of the Canterbury, Wanganui, Manawatu and Wellington representatives left by the morning train for the south, and a good send off was accorded them. At the gates on Friday and Saturday almost 220 guineaß were taken, which, with entrance fees, &c, swell the proceeds to .£260. This should leave the Napier Association a fair profit over the gathering.
