SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held to-day; present— Mr M'Millan (chairman), Messrs W. Dunlop, J. Rennie, W. Boag, H. W. Peryman, K. Westenra, J. G. Murray, J. Gougb, and A. Widen. The Chairman stated that the following correspondence had been received: — From the Eiccarton Eoad Board, enclosing correspondence in reference to the proposal to constitute a borough at Eiccarton. From Mr Tothill, Invereargill, in reference to the spread of the Californian thistle. From the Inspector of Stock, giving notice to destroy rabbit 3 in plantation reserves. From the Commiesioner of Crown Lands, asking for j information as to the expediency of introj ducing a Fair Rent Bill dealing with all classes of land. From the Commissioner of Taxes, stating that he had certified to the payment of an advance of 75 per cent of the .. subsidy payable to the county for the current year. From the Eakaia Eoad Board, objecting to contribute towards the maintenance of the Whitecliffs bridge. From the Christchurch Tramway Company, asking the Council to make application to the Governor for authority under the tramways Act, 1894, for the company to extend the j tramway along the Lincoln Eoad to the j Asylum. From. Mr East, reporting on the | EUesmere drainage. From, several Eoad j Boards, applying fer cost of birds' heads j purchased on behalf of the County Council, j From the Charitable Aid Board, enclosing a ' list of persons in receipt of charitable aid in the county. From the Heathcote Eoad Board, applying for payment of amounts voted for maintaining roads in the district. After correspondence had been read between Mr Eussell and the Biccarton Eoad Board, it was resolved that the Council should write to the Colonial Secretary, endorsing the viewß of the Eoad Board. With regard to the Californian thißtle, it was decided that the attention of the Boad Boards ehould be called to the matter. It was decided that permits' ehould be issued to destroy rabbits, in plantation reserves. The question of the Fair Bent Bill was adjourned to a future meeting. A letter was read from the UnderSecretary of Public .Works to the Eakaia Eoad Board as to. the maintenance of the Whitecliffs Bridge, but the Council found itself unable to take any step's in the matter. . , It was decided that the Tramway Company should be asked to furnish the dooumenta required.by the Tramways Act, and to give a : guarantee that it would - indemnify the Council for any necessary expense incurred; and also that a oopy of the letter Bhould be sent to the Boad Boards interested, and tbat they should be asked for any suggestions they might have to make. A committee, consisting of Messrs Murray, Peryman and the Chairman, was appointed to consider the best means of .clearing the Eiver Halswell, and to. report . to the Council, .after consulting the Eoad Boards interested. The tender of Mr Acton- Adams for leasing reserves at Burnbam was accepted. A report waß received from the inspector of slaughter-houses, recommending that the applications for renewals of licenses should be granted. This was agreed to. A report from the inspector of waterraces stated that recent rainß in the bills had ensured a full supply of water for some time to come. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting closed. . ■' ' i -— a .
