YACHTING.

TPeii Pbess Association. I J WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. Great interest was taken in the_ scale handicap yacht race yeeterday owing to I tbe f_ct that the competitors included the Waitangi from Auckland and tho Mascotte ! and Pastime from Lyttelton, and all the prinoipal local yachts. The course was once round the champion couree of Tuesday, about sixteen miles. A heavy southerly breeze waa blowing at the Btart, but moderated as the day wore on. Waitangi (» cratch) soon took the lead, and maintained it to the finish. The race waa robbed of a goad deal of interest owing to one of the Mascotte'a crew (N. Haydon) falling overboard. She lost so much time in attempting to rescue him that she lost nny chance of winning, and gave up. She had a handicap of sis minutes from the Waitangi, and when the accident occurred was Eeveral hundred yards behind her. Pastime, whioh waa overhauling Mascotte, stopped to assist Haydon, otherwise she would have won the first pri_.} on her time allowance of fifteen miuntee. Aa it is she takes third prize, being leBS than one second behind Waitangi. The first prize was won by Isea (seventeen minutes), which finished fifteen minutes behind Waitangi. If ihe Lyttelton boats can remain the race will bo retailed next Saturday. Judge Oliver, of Sydney, was umpire. Haydon # was re.oued by the Yacht Club's steamer in an exhausted condition.
