Lyttelton Amatetib athl-tjc Association.—At a meeting held on Saturday night, a programme of swimming races was approved oi for tbe sports on Saturday next. Seven events were pub down, with a 60yds inter-club race included. As the races are to be in the graving dock, the publio will have a grand view all through. Mobbis-tube Shooting. — - On Friday evening last the Christchurch Working Men's Club Bifle Class fired off tbe thirtyfirst stage, seven . shots, 500 yds, for prizes presented by Messrs J. Gould, Manning and Co., J. Preece, Ashby, Bergh and Co., S. H. Vernazoni and G. Bonnington, with the following leading results:— H. Sp'cer (2) 84, George Allen (2) 34, W. A. Caldwell (2) 34, G. H. Thb Hospital.— Dr Deamer is the honorary physician, and Dr Nedwill the -honorary Burgeon in attendance at the Christchurch Hospital this week. Ths Governob. — Lord Glasgow and party arrived from Wellington yesterday by tbe steamer Te Anau, and proceeded south to-day to join the Hinemoa at the i Bluff. From there they will proceed round the Sounds, afterwards visiting the Auckland Islands. Timabt- Habbotjb Boabd. — Tbe Timaru Harbour Board election will take place early next month. Nominations are to be in on dates from Jan. 31 to Feb. 5. So far as is known there will be no contests. The personnel of the new Board will differ considerably from that of the present one, several members declining on various grounds to come forward again. Mining.— The following are the Boef ton , gold-mining returns for laßt week : — Globe, 1660z of amalgam from 120 tons; Keep-it-Dark, 1740z of amalgam from 156 tone, clean up ; Alpine, 3480z of amalgam from 200 tonB ; Progress, 2720z of amalgam from 220 tona; Big Biver, 3410z of amalgam from 170 tons; Cocksparrow dredge, 330z of amalgam, for 108 hours j Buller dredge, 290z of gold for 116 hours. The amount of coal exported from Greymouth last week was 3798 tons, and from Waßtport 4381 tonß. Pigeon Flying.— The . Christchuroh Pigeon Flying Club flew off a race from Hinds, on Saturday! Twenty-four birds competed. Mr M'Laren's Bimn waa the winner, with a velocity of 923'2yda per minute. Owing to the excessive heat the velocity was slow. The club desires to thank the stationmaster for liberating the birds. Mttsic at the Pbo-Cathedbal. — Testerday members of the Boyal Comio . Opera Company again assisted at the musical services in the Pro-Cathedral, Barbadoes Street. Gounod's "Mesae Solennelle" was produced in its entirety, the many beautiful though difficult solos being most effectively rendered by Mrs W. Neil son (soprano), Mr W. Neilaon (tenor), and Mr J. Briggs (bass). The choruses throughout went extremely well. At the offertory Mr Neilaon sang Bellini's "Veni Creator Spirituß," and Mra Neilaon Maacheroni'a " Aye Maria" with violin obligato by MiBB Freda Marsden. At the conclusion of the Mass, Mesers Behan and Briggs sang a duet, Bontichi's "Beata Nobis Gaudia." In the evening, after the sermon preaohed by the Bishop, during which he thanked the ladies and gentlemen who had ao generously given their services on that and the preceding Sunday, Mr Neilson sang " The Holy City," (Stephen Adams.) At Benediction MeBB-B Neilson, Briggs and Behan sang Mercadante's " 0 Salutaria," and Miss Campion a "Tantum Ergo" by Paolo Bodoira. Miss Fans ton, the organist, presided at the instrument at all the servicea. " Lyttelton Times " Siok Fund So- / ciety. — The annual meetiug of members of the Lyttelton Times Siok Fund Society was held on Saturday evening. There were eighty members present, and considerable interest was taken in the proceedings. The chair was occupied by Mr T. H. Davey, one of the vice-presidents. The annual report showed that there were 106 members; the receipts from contributions during the year had been .8123 3_, £90 15s had been expended in aick allowances, and the Society's financial position was extremely satisfactory. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year :— Patron, Hon W. P. Beeves ; president, Mr T. H. Davey; vice-presidents, Messrs F. E. Hyman, J. B. Tulley and F. C. East; treasurer, Mr F. E. Wilkin) the Chairman referred to the valuable services renderedby Mr Wilkin during the long term of yearß he had occupied the position, and expressed regret that circumstances had induced him to resign. Christchurch Regatta.— The Star . Boating Club (Wellington), Blenheim Rowing Club and Wellington Rowing , Club have decided to send crews to compete at the Christchurch Regatta, to be held on the Estuary on Feb. 28. Fibes.— On Saturday morning a fire • broke oub in tbe railway plantation near | the Ashburton Bridge. The steam fire- ' engine extinguished tho flames, but not I before a good deal of damage had been done.— A fire broke out on the farm of Mr J. Smith, Newlands, on Saturday afternoon. The house and outbuildings were destroyed. Cibcus. —On Saturday afternoon the large tent of Fitzgerald Brother's circus was uncomfortably crowded, and at the final performance in the evening there was another crowded houoe, the various items and especially Captain Graham's lion feat, being loudly applauded. Messrs Fitzgerald Brothers have no reason to complain of the patronage bestowed upon them during the past week, f or their season has certainly been a record one. Within an hour of the conclusion of the performance the huge tent had been taken down and packed away, and before morning the paraphernalia had left by special train for Lincoln, where an entertainment will be given this evening, after which the circus ' will proceed overland to Dunedin. Temperance Meeting. — A very large crowd gathered in Cathedral Square on Saturday evening, when Mr R. Crabb} temperance lecturer, delivered au address. On the waggon supporting the lecturer were the Revs L. M. and F. W. Isitt and Mr J. J. Parker. Mr Crabb was somewhat personal in his replies to ejaculations from the crowd, and the proceedings were almost brought to an abrupt termination by one of the men attacked jumping on the cart and demanding an apology, which, after some demur, Mr Crabb gave. After this there was great excitement, and Mr Crabb waa finally escorted to his lodgings by a large and demonstrative mob.
