Abhbubtox Gas Company. — The sixteenth annual general meeting of the Ashburton Gas, Coal and Coke Company was held on Thursday afternoon. Mr T. Bullock occupied the chair. In moving the adoption of the report and balance' sheet, the Chairman congratulated the shareholders on the finaccial position of the company, and said that the directors were able to recommend a dividend of seven per cent. The report and balancesheet were adopted. Messrs H. 3?riedlander and i?'. B. Sfc&ndiah were unanimoutsly re-elected directors, and Mr Albert | Roberts was appointed auditor in the place of Mr G. Jameson, who had left the district. Aeronauts cannot rise much above five miles vertically on account of the increasing rarity of the air, but double that height has been attained by selfregistering balloons, which tell us that some ninety degrees of frost prevail up there.
