DISTINGUISHED PATRONAGE.
The Earl of Caithness, who died in 1881,, was wont to tell the following story:— "When visiting Toronto, Ontario, he want into a shop to get some white paint that he required. The shopman behind the counter, . noticing the pipe that his lordship was smoking, said, "That* ■ a bonny pipe you've got." The earl saw that the shopman was a Scotchman, and replied, " Yes, it's s> very nice pipe." The shopkeeper than looked at it more particularly and remarked, " That's a pretty thing you've get on the top of it. Why, matt, it's s> coronet." The earl admitted that it was, whereupon the shopman added, 'UVs an earl's coronet." "Yes," was . the reply, (< it's an earl's coronet; and I've as good right to wear id as anybody else, seeing , that I am the Earl of Caithness." The shopman exclaimed in wonder, "Mao, you. don't say so P" then jumped the counter and nearly wrung his Lordship's hand off j and wound up by shouting to an acquaint* ance across the Btreet, " Here, Henderson, hi! who do you think I've got in my shop P Why, it's the Earl of Caithness 1 7 *
