A man kept ■vigil by a lonely fire. Inscrutable the night on every side Hang round. The ruddy glow now almost died ; Now, fann'd by wandering winds, ifc flickered :' i higher. The -watcher tended it with ceaseless care, . And, ever as it waned, he crouched still nigiier, Till, weary and o'erwatched, he *gan to tire ; i Then slept. He woke. Lo ! day was shining 1 fair.
