LIFE'S VIGIL.
A man kept ■vigil by a lonely fire. Inscrutable the night on every side Hang round. The ruddy glow now almost died ; Now, fann'd by wandering winds, ifc flickered :' i higher. The -watcher tended it with ceaseless care, . And, ever as it waned, he crouched still nigiier, Till, weary and o'erwatched, he *gan to tire ; i Then slept. He woke. Lo ! day was shining 1 fair. Even than a vigil do all mortals keep ■ Beside the fire of Life, whose fitful ray la girt with Night, where thro" no eyes may peep. "We tend the flickering flame as best we may, And by-and-bye we drowse, then fall asleep, -And when we waken up we find 'tis Day. C. J. O'Begah. .' Inangfthua Junction,
