In the Supreme Court*- W. Doyle was convicted of obtaining £9 17s 6d from T. H. Alderton, of Napier, by false pretences, and remanded for sentence. David Mnnro alias Warren, charged with having robbed a coloured man, named John Lawrence, with violence, in Wellington, was acquitted. DUNEDIN, Nov. 21. The divorce case, Samuel Shields v. Janet Shields (respondent) and T. Edward Brown (co-respondent), the husband's petition, came on to-day. No defence was filed, and there waa no appearance on that behalf. The circumstances were rather peculiar. Samuel Shields, the petitioner, married the respondent in January, 1893, having kept company for about two years. His employer had impressed upon him that it.was improper for a young man to marry on his salary. The parties were married, but agreed to live apart bo that the employer should not know. The petitioner paid for his wife's board, but she subsequently took a situation at a hotel. The petitioner, having reason to suspeot his wife, secured her lodging in the country, but she only remained there^ a few days, when she took a situation in another hotel. From reports ho heard, petitioner's suspicions were confirmed. His employer having died, be took a I house for his wife, but the parties did not then and had never lived together. A watch was set and evidence secured. His Honor granted a decree nisi, with costs against the co-respondent. The petitioner's conduct appeared to have been honest and his intentions good. He was not prepared to cay that if he had made an error of judgment it could have conduced to the wife's adultery. .
