CRICKET.
SOUTHLAND V. CANTERBURY.
The tnterprovincial match Southland v. Canterbury was commenced at Lancaster Park at 10.40 a.m. The weather was fine but the wicket was rather dead. Fowfce, the Canterbury captain, won the tcs<j and decided to take the field. Twemlow and Quinu went first; to the wickets and Robertson took up the bowling at tbe southern end. The Midland crack disposed of Twemlow with his second ball ; Kingsland came next, and after scoring five was clean bowled by Robertson. Brown partnered Quinn, and opened his account with a single. A little later Quinn was bowled by Robertson, and Burnes joined Brown. The latter was playing very steadily, and Burneß commenced by hitting Robertson to leg for four. In tbe next over Hasell caught Burnes in the slips. Four wickets were down for 24. The remaining batsmen only added ten runs to tbe score, the luninga closing for 34 shortly before noon. Robertson and Uru bowled throughout, and divided the wicketa between them. Scores :

Ridley and to'Farlane opened Canterbury's firat innings to the bowling of Stevenßon and Dalrymple. Ridley after scoring 8 stopped a Btraight ball from Dalrymple and retired. Kitto filled the vacancy and played out the- over. In the next over M'Farlane waa well caught by Brown after scoring 9, and "W ilding came in. Kitto was caught without scoring, and Wilding wa3 bowled by Dalrymple after scoring 7. Reese and Fowke then became partners, and runs came freely till the Midlander was bowled by Dalrymple. The outgoing batsmen played nicely for hiß runs. Scores :—
