— * Church Property. ' TO THE EDITOE. Sir,— lt is stated that a petition is to be presented to the Government by Biehop Julius, praying for the exemption of taxes on Church property. It is to be hoped that such a prayer will not be granted. Some of the most valuable land in this island iibeld by the trnstees of the Church property, and as they have always levied the highest rent on their tenantß, I fail to see- why they should not pay taxes like any other land-owners. Instead of making any conctanon the Government should compel them to drain their fever beds and make them repair, or still better, pull down those hovels which are a disgrace to the Church, and a Bcandal to the city, We all know the good-will shown to all men who cannot pay their rent, and we should never have known that piece of cruelty if it had not been for the Star; Anyone who has seen the wretched tenements occupied by the poor, and for which they are charged exorbitant rents (considering the Btate of the hous b), must be thoroughly disgusted at the greed and rapacity shown by the Church Property Trustees.— l am, &c, Sept. 11.
