The College Committee reoommended the Board as follows :— That Miss Stella Hendereon's resignation of the position of teacher in cookery at the Girls' High School should be accepted ; that the College Committee should be authorised to appoint a successor to Miss Henderson for one year at a salary at a rate not exceeding £75 per annum, subject to three months' notice in writing on either side ; that the committee should be authorised to apply to the Governor-in-Counoil for permission to borrow the sum of JB4OOO f or the purpose of increasing the accommodation at the Boys' High Sohool; that the committee should be authorised to obtain plans and specifications for the proposed additions to the buildinga and submit the same to the Board. It was decided to advertise, but to leave the salary unaltered. Eeferriug to Clauße 3, the Chairman eaid that the head-master had written regarding the want of accommodation. If an addition were not made notice would have to be given to the effect that no more scholars could be taken. Although £-000 was over the estimate it had been thought desirable to obtain permission to borrow a sum larger than the amount immediately required. The Hon J. T. Peacock aaid that the grounds of the Boys' High School were hardly large enough to allow of more buildings being put up. He had considered whether it would not be better to convert the Girls' High Sohool into the boys' school and build on to tbat instead of to the present boys' school. The boys could play in the square, and the necessity of purchasing land as a playground would be avoided. The Chairman pointed out that several schools already utilised the square, and he was not sure thab the proposed, arrangements would be welcomed by the townspeople. The letters from the head-master concerning the want of accommodation were read. Every available corner was utilised, and his own office had sometimes to be pressed into service ; classes were now being held in the college students' rooms ; one case some thirty boys were in a room 19ft by 15ffc. The want of accommodation told greatly against efficient teaching. After discussion, it was decided, on the motion of the Hon W. Montgomery and Mr Ehodes— "That the Estates Committee be requested to consider the question of the security to be given for the proposed loan, and report on the possible, income to be derived from the endowments to the Boyß' .High School during the next few years."
