Our Own Large Importations for the Season to be thrown into this EXTRAORDINARY SALE. Extract from the Auckland " Star" of 28th March. "The premises in Queen Street, until recently occupied by Messrs M' Arthur and Co., presented a scene of unwonted activity to-day, when the large stock of the firm was offered for sale by Messrs Sargood, Ewen and Co., who, as is already known, have lately purchased it. The sale, which iB the largest of the kind that has ever been held in New Zealand, was well advertised throughout the colony, and from both islands purchasers nocked in anticipation of bargains. This morning, long before the doors of the warehouses were opened, the street was crowded with would-be purchasers waiting for admission, and during the progress of the sale the numbers kept augmenting till. lunch time. The viow that met the eye when one first entered the building was striking in the immense profusion of material. Great stacks of snowwhite blankets, of tweeds, quilts, linens, cottons, occupied every inch of floor room save what was necessary to enable the buyers to inspect the goods. These bales lay piled six or seven feet high, each lot marked in clear figures, so that purchasers had little need to inquire of the ready salesmen. Upstairs the same admirable order was preserved. What first attracted the eye waß a profusion of coloured ribbons, but these were but an insignificant item among the immense quantities of fabrics and fancy goods stored there. Notwithstanding the large attendance there was no confusion. All were in excellent spirits, and they had good reason to be so, for the low prices at, which the goods were marked were of themselves quite sufficient to make the most melancholy tradesman rejoice. The lots were so arranged as 'to suit purchasers. The consequence was that the stock quitted very rapidly, and it is estimated that before I— neb half of it bad been sold." •$_- Our SHOPS are CLOSED for MASKING OFF on THUBSDAY, And the GBEAT SALE of McABTHUB'S !
