Story Competition. — Particulars of the Fourth Prize Story Competition of tbe Canterlury Times will be found in an advertisement. Chribtchtjrch Stipendiary Magistrate's Court.— There was no business for transaction at the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court thi6 morning. Propobed Inebriate Ward. — At the meeting of the Hospital Board to*d*y, Mr CM. Gray gave notice of a motion affirming the desirableness and necessity of establishing a ward for inebriates in the hospital. Did He Mean It. — At the meeting held in the City Council Chamber last evening, to disnnes the unemployed question, one speaker referred to New Zealand as " the finest country tbat the sun ever sat upon." Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board.— Nominations of candidates to fill four vacancies on tbe above Board closed at noon to-day. Those nominated were Messrs D. M'lntyre, G. Wallace, J. B. Moody, H. P. Gray, and J. Kelcher. The election will take place on May 5. Supreme Court.— A matter tit re a solicitor, calling upon him to' show cause why he should not be Btruck off the roll, vras- brought by the Law Society before his Honor Mr Justice Denniston in banco this morning, and was moved into the Court of Appeal. His Honor leaves for Wellington to-morrow evening to attend the sittings of that Court. Musical and Literart Society.— The St Albans and Crescent Eoad Musical and Literary Society held its opening " social " yesterday evening. The president occupied the chair. Songs were given by Miss Chaplin and Mr W. Godfrey ; recitations by Miss Wilson and Mr G. Kelly ; a pianoforte solo by Miss Ellison, and a flute trio by Messrs Dalmer (2) and Selwyn. After refreshments had been handed round, parlour game3 were indulged in till a late hour. The principal officers for the coming season are :— President, Rev J. A. Luxford; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. W. Salter; assistant -secretary and reporter, Mr C. Wright j editor of " Journai," Misb Smith. The Citt Council Reserves. — Tbe Mayor and City Councillors will make their" annual visit to the City Council \ reserves on Thursday morning. Conveyances will leave the City Council office at half-past nine. Social Gathering. — A very successful social gathering was held last evening in the Kingaley Club rooms by those who took part in the performance of the opera Hadrian's Daughters. About thirty couples were present, and dancing was indulged in to the music of Mr Mazey's quadrille band. Mr Smith provided the refreshments. 1 Concert at the Art Gallery.— This evening a concert will be given in the Art Gallery under the directorship of Mr W. Leech who will be remembered a9 having given a very successful concert here some months ago. The performers will be Miss Leech and Miss Alyce Leech, Messrs P. Woodhouse, J. P. Marshall and W. Leech. Mrs Edgar will act a3 accompanist. Inquest. — On Monday evening an inquiry was held before Mr L. Oxley, J.P., and a jury of six with Mr C. Dixon as foreman, touching the death of William O'Hara, whose body was recovered from the Rakaia riverbed on Sunday morning. Evidence was given by W. Neven, J. Stewart, J. Commander, A. S. Cole and Constable Lewis, and the jury returned a verdict of " Found drowned." Canterbury Rowing Club.— The presentation of the prizes won by the members of the Canterbury Rowing Club during the year took place at the Clufc 8 sheds last evening. The proceedings took the form of a Bmoke concert. The toastlist was as follows :— "The Queen," "The Prize- winners," "The Losers," "Other Bowing Clubs," "The Press," "Kindred Sports" and "New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association." Songs were sung by Messrs March, Jones, F. W. Hobbs, H. Hobbs, Revell and Appleby, and Messrs E. Nicoll, Stow and Johnston gave recitations. The Minister of Lands. — A telegram from Timaru states that the Minister of Lands was met yesterday at the Pareora crossing by a deputation of the Geialdine and Waimate County Councils and local residents. He inspected the river and heard statements in . support of the request for Government "assistance in restoring the main road bridge. He gave no definite promise, except that if the Government engineers approved of the plans he would lay the matter before his colleagues. Assistance had been given in some casea where large works were needed. The cost in this caGe was estimated at £700 to conflne the river and .£3500 for a bridge.
