SPORTING NOTES.

I- _ (Canterbury Times.) I AUSTRALIAN. ! The building of D. O'Brien's Btables at Randwick has been commenced. The connections of Broken Hill are stated to have wpn 510,000 by their horse's victory in the ' Australian Cup, which, nevertheless, was an excellent one for the bookmakers. Lord Randolph who won the Maiden Stakes at the Viotoria Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, and who it will be remembered oost 2300gs as a yearling, is described as a massive horse and jußt the sort to win a Melbourne Cup. In the Sydney Referee of March 7 " Verax " gives an account of a visit to J. Allsop's stable. He writes in the following ! terms concerning some of the occupanfce :— Florrie is a beautiful bay, with black points, and should be fit about the autumn meeting. . She is one of the handsomest mares in training, and I hope Mr He.ll, 1 whose luck has been none of the best, will win a good race with her. New Zealanders who, I am told, have fond remembrances of Florrie, will be pleased to hear the bonnie bay is as sound aB a bell. Trenohant is a beautiful little fellow, a perfect racehorse in miniature. He does not, I should say, stand over 15.1, and there are a good many galloways racing could give him a couple of inches or more. He has some of ihe Arab about him in the shape of his head, and he carries himself well. He io big in condition, and has been treated to a spell in oue of Mr Allsop's paddocks. • Trenohsnt'e feet and teeth have given him a good deal of trouble, and the wonder is he has run so well. He is too small to be an ideal Derby colt, but he iB handsome enough to wear the "blue • ribbon" and set it off to advantage. Atlas, eh o, 2yrs, by Cranbrook— Millie, by Grandmaster, her dam Vesper, by Bar- i barian, was bred by his owner, Mr H. C. ! White. He is the bigrgeßt two-year-old, I think, I ever saw. He is certainly one of the biggest. He stands nearly as high as his sire now, and he makes a dwarf of Buch a horse as Trenchant. There is no mis- , taking who his sire is. He iB a Cranbrook all over. He iB a similarly coloured colt to his sire, with a couple of white bind stockings and a white off fore foot. He has tremendous bone, and is a great length. His measurement would be Interesting, I am certain, Standing considerably over sixteen hand?, nearer seventeen I Bhould say, he is built in proportion. He looks like a fully developed, well-grown three-year-old. He has a deep girth, and hia legs are strong and without a blemish, and look quite capable of supporting his body, . which is saying a lot. He has quarters ; like a steeplechaser, and his shoulders are well set, and his neok, which is mueoular, supports a fine intelligent head. He is a racehorse, every inch of him. When ; thoroughly fit, and with the colours up, the ! remark that will probably be passed on the racecourse is, " There goes Cranbrook — or ' his ghost." He will be speoia'ly prepared I for the important three-year-old engage- ' | ments in the spring, and with ordinary luck should turn out a winner. He ought to be kept in mind for the next Derby. |
