Proposed Loan for Sumner.

A meeting of ratepayers wbb held on Thursday evening, in the Town flail, Sumner. The Mayor, Mr James Tait, who occupied the chair, stated that the meeting had been called for the purpose of considering the advisablenesa of raising a loan of JBISOO, for the extension of the water mains through the township and paying off the existing liabilities. He spoke in favour of tbe loan, aad pointed out that if it were raiaed the borough would be able to do all its work with a general rate of tenpence in the pound instead of one chilling as was now. paid. Should tbe proposal to raise the loan" not be carried, the Council wculd ba compelled to strike a rate of one shilling; snd threepence iv the pound, in order to pay off liabilities. The engineer, Mr Crawford, gave a full account of how the provious loan bad bean expended and aho the satisfactory results therefrom. Up to date, the receipts had been £78 10a and the expenditure for tbe year, including coal and management, only amounted to £46 Bs, thus showing a surplua of .£32 2a. He pointed out that by the proposed extension _he Council would be able to connect nearly fifty additional houses already erected, and several others about to be built. Mr W. A. C'irpenter moved-— "That it is the opinion of this meeting' of ratepayers that the proposal to borrow tho eu-_t cf .£ISOO for the purpose of extending the water mains to other streets, and to the junction of Lyttelton and Heberden Koads, and paying off the existing liabilities on waterworks, should be approved." The motion was seconded by Mr G. E. Drew. Messrs Lake, Bell, Wrenn, Spear, Eoper, Eanger and others took part in the discussion. Tbe motion was cariied, only three handn being held up againßt it. The Mayor then declared tbat a poll of the ratepayers would be held on Thuraday, April 5.- A vote of thanks to the chairman cloaed the meeting.
