CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
BJessrs Toneycliffe and Carey's New Premises.
Finding their business increasing to auch an extent tba*-, their premises were inadequate to cope with the demands made upon them, Messrs Toneycliffe and Carey have erected a new building on the site cf their old one in Colcmbr> Street, and have also taken in the groupd lately cccupied by the shop of Mr Alpe, tobacsonist. The new building ia now complete, and will bo opened to-day. Tha front, which ia a handsome ona of two Bt.ries, ia 30ft in extent, is faced with pressod bricks aad is tuck-pointe<3, aud tbe three upßtaira windows are relieved with atucco hoodo, having sunk moulded pilasters on either side. Over these runs the main cornice, furmounted by a h-mdaooie pediment, the firm's name bding prominent in raised gilt letters. Over the- footpath is a circularheaded gl&BS verandah, and a sunk doorway divides the two large plate glaas rsho-v: windows. The larger of these, which is nicely fitted with mirrors, and well lighted by patent gas burners, with well-contrived opal Bhades, is intended for tbe display of drapery and millinery, while the amaller one will be used as a show window for men's clothing and marcery. The shop itself is commodious and handsomely -fried up. ' Thß counters, wbioh are of polished rimu, ara panelled and ornamented with heavy . carved brackets. A novelty haa beon introduced in the shop, of a foot-' Btool, running th 9 whole length of ..the counter?, which will no doubt be appreciated by lady customers. On one side are the clothing and dress departments, separated by tba cash-taker's office, and on the ocher tho Manchester, fancy and glove departments occupy the whole length of the shop. The cabinets and show stands are all* of cedar, and pre of handsome design. The showroam, n sp.icioua apartment, is entered by au archway, and is well lighted by skylights, and fitted with plats glass mirrors and counters. A door : way from tbis roDm leads into a wellventilated apartment, used aa a millinery workroom, aud off thia is a lavatory, intended for tbe use of customers. A staircase from th« shop leads to the stock* room upstairs. The firm is to be congratulated upon the possession of these fine premises, which are fitted with every modern convenience.
