CRICKET.

NEW SOUTH WALES v. NORTH ISLAND. [Per Pbess Association.]

WELLINGTON, Feb. 19.

The cricket match between the Sydney men and the North Island team began today. The weather was unsettled in the morning, but cleared up and a fair wicket was provided, though rather bare of grass and inclined to crumble. The balls got up unpleasantly nowand then, and as it was evident that the first use of the wicket would prove of considerable advantage, Davis was well pleased to win the toBB and go in. There was not at any time a large attendance. The visitors proved to be in good form, and performed well with the bat. The scoring was very even, as out of a total of 220 Cowley's 38 was the highest innings. Mackenzie a<-.d Moore, both batting freely, put on 61 for the first wicket, but the former should have been caught off a hard drive early in the game. Apart from this there was nothing to find fault with in the fielding except a want of dash. M'Donough waß a failure with the ball, and Mills met with little success till he went on against the wind, when the wickets fell quickly. He came out with the very good average of seven for 70, bnt, so far as could be seen, there was not much in his bowling, except that he maintained a good length. When the home team went in Cross hit up 22 in as many minutes with the help of a little luck. Mills, of Auckland, afforded a great contrast, as he remained at the wickets an hour and forty minutes for 26 runs, but as he is still not out his steadiness promises to be of great service to his side. M'Donough waß not allowed to stay long enough to show what he could do, and with four good men gone for 70, it will take the New Zealanders all their time to save a follow-on on an imperfect wicket, especially if it comes on t j rain, as is not improbable.
