Ashburton County Council.
The monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Council was held' yesterday; present— Messrs Hugo Friedlander (chair man), C. J. Harper, E. G. Wright, D. Cameron and Donald Williamson. A statement of the business done by the Chairman since last meeting and the rangers' reports were laid on the table. The Engineer's report w&3 read and considered. Referring to the matter of tampering with the sluices on water-races, Mr Wright: moved—-" That a reward of JBlO be offered for information that will enable the Council to convict any person or peraons tampering with sluices or water-races." The motion was seconded by the Chairman and carried. It was resolved that the Engineer Bhould be instructed to carry out the necessary work in connection with Hinds flumes. Mr Wright reported an interview he had had with the Crown Lands Commissioner aa to water supply for thirds' settlers. The Commissioner had promised to get a report on the proposed work, and reconsider the subject. It was decided to instruct the Engineer to collect the necessary information, and request the Crown Lands Commissioner to authorise the payment of all charges out of the accumulated thirds so long as they are available; to carry ont the Engineer's suggestion respecting sheep bridges ; to instruct the Engineer to have tho timber of all bridges in the county tarred and sanded. The committee appointed to report on the Wakanui Creek question handed in its report, which was adopted. Mr Allan waited upon the Council, asking for alteration in deed of agreement respecting Acton irrigation works. The Council agreed to send a copy of the deed to the representatives of Mr Allan's firm in Dunedin for approval. Accounts amounting to about £200 were passed for payment. | The Hon W. C. Walker wrote, resigning hie seat in the Council. Mr Friedlander moved, Mr Wright seconded, and it was carried— "That Mr i Walker's resignation be accepted with I regret." It wbb resolved that the necessary steps be taken to fill the vacancy. It was resolved that Mr Wright be a member of the Ashburton High School Board, in the place of Mr Walker, resigned; that Mr John Qtigg be recommended to be appointed, in place of Mr Walker, resigned, on the Charitable Aid Board; that tilling up the Vacancy on the ■Planting Committee be deferred until the election of the new member. Mesara Sprott Bros, and M. Jones wrote, apologising for haying tampered with the water-races. Their apology was accepted on payment of solicitor's charges, and it was decided to elect a Standing Committee, consisting of Messrs Wright, Williameon and the Chairman, to investigate and take such action as may be deemed necessary in cases ot tampering with water supply. . Several applications for water supply were granted. It was resolved that for the licensing election the tame polling booths as at the general election; \>e approved of; that application be made to the Government for the sum - of £350 to meet ': the cost* of licensing election, the Council having rid funds, but a heavy overdraft. - A special meeting, to adopt an order in connection with letting Mount Somers tramway to Mr Peach, was held immediately after the ordinary meeting, and the special order was adopted. The proceedings then terminated.
