AN IMPECUNIOUS COUNCIL.
A Modest Request. [Pbb Pbbss Association.] WELLINGTON, Jan. 24. A deputation from the Buller, consisting of Messrs M'Kenzie (M.H.R.), Larson (Mayor of Westport) and Hughes (chairman of the Buller County Council) waited upon the Premier to urge that Government shonld take over the repair and maintenance of the Brunner-Westport main road. They pointed out that the County Council waa in debt to the extent of from £10,000 to £11,000, and th_t, as the annual revenue of the Counoil was only abont £4000, the repair of the road I was beyond its means. Besides this, bridges were falling into decay, and becoming unsafe. The Premier replied that if Government were t^ undertake the maintenance of this particular road, there were other roads in different parts of the colony in respect of which similar representations could be made; and consequently this application involved a large question of policy. Under the circumstances tbe Government could not undertake what was asked ; but the Buller County last year obtained a grant of £500 out of the Nelson- Westport Hokitika main road vote, and, as a portion of the grant would be due |on March 31, the Government would be prepared to advance this amount at once.
