ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
The infant Bon of Mr Catea, late of ; Christchurch, a cooper at the \Vaahdyka wool works, was , smothered in its cot : yesterday. The mother r>ut it in the cot to sleep during the morning, covering ,it : with muslin. When Bhe looked at it again the infant had tamed on its face, J and Lad been dead some time. ; An inquest was held at iiaka Tekapo j : Hotel on Wednesday, before Mr G. M'Gtregor, J.P., regarding the death of ; Prank Eoasiter, who waa accidentally killed at Mi9take Station on Monday. Prom the ] evidence given, it appeared that deceased ■ went to tho station to fetch away a young . horse of his running there. The horse : was yarded, and the manager, Mr Gnthrie, tried to catch it by LichWark's method. , Deceased waa standing outaide the gate, : resting his arms on the top rail. The ; horse got away from Mr Guthria at the further end of the yard, made a daah at | the gate, and deceased stepped back a little. The top rail, however, broke with , the weight of the horse, and flew out- : wards, striking Roaster a terrific blow on the aide of the head, under the ear. j He fell at once, and blood gushed from his \ mouth,noso and ears. This wasathalf-paist sevon in the evening. He never regained . consciousness, and died about seven hours later. The jury found that deceased met ] hia death hj accident, and that no blame 1 attached to anyone. The deceased had t been many years in the Mackenzie Country, and was well known aa a coach proprietor and driver. He was much ] respected, and hiß funeral at Eurke's Pass . on Wednesday was largely attended. He was a native of Oak Hill, Somersetshire, : and about; forty years cf age. He is understood to have no relatives in the colony. ] A se7ere though fortunately not dan- I gerous accident happened to Mrs Edward Wall, Hamilton (saya the Auckland ; Herald). She wao engaged building a ] stack of hay, and when pn the &tack she : stumbled, and dropping her fork fell upon it, when one oE the prongs entered f her side below the breast, coming out at her back. Dr Brewis waa at once sent; for, , but not having returned from To Awa- ] mutu, did not arrive for some time. Mrs < Wall would not allow the fork to be re- I moved until he came, fearing the hemorrhage that was likely to ensue. Tha doctor, . however, removed it at once, and upon ] esamination found that the wound was not : a dangerons one, for though the fork had • pierced the ribs, it bad passed through ■without touching any vital part.
