KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
«i . The fortnightly meeting of the above Council wa3 held on Tuesday; present— hiß Worship (in the chair), and Councillors Weston, Mathewa, Blighting, Whitehead, Bugg, Hopkins, Butt, and Lißsaman. Leave of absence wa3 granted to Councillor Evans. Correspondence was received— From the Minister oE Justice, relating to the licensing district, and suggesting Kaiapoi as tbe central for the dis'rict. His Worship stated that he had answered the letter, concurring with its contents. His action was approved. From several burgesses, requesting insertion of their name3 on the burgess roll. Agreed to, subject to the requisite compliance. From Mr W. Anderson, requesting permission to remove building from Sewell Street to the North Eoad. Agreed to, subject to the usual conditions being adberad to. From the Mandeville and Rangiora Boad Board, enclosing cheque for ,£3 5s 7d, te'mg one-half o:sb of repairs to Smith Street, but disclaiming any liability for footpaths or for draiDS on Beach Road. Bseolved to acknowledge receipt of Bame, and to hold the part referring to Beach Eoad over for further consideration. The dog t*x for the coming year was fixad as kst year, viz., 10a and 2s 6d respectively, the latter for bon&fide sheep and cat iJe dgs j and it was decided to call for teadere for the supply of collars by next meeting. The subject of the strip of land from Baker's Tra3teep, adjourned from last meeting, was then considered, and it was resolved to have the land put under the Land Trats?er A fc Councillor Wesfon reported that the s'nkiog of the t\ ell on the cemetery property had been stopped owing to the piper being choked with quickaandj and, aftes consideration of the matter, it was finally agreed to accept the offer of Mr J. Clarke to put a well down, guaranteeing a good flow, for the amount of M. Councillor Brigbting suggested the advisability of enquiring the price of a watereart for use in the borough, maintaining that it would be a saving in the cost of repairs to the street3 ; aleo that the torse used for the watercart would be available for haulago of the fire-engine to fires, and tlius gave the expense of hiring* It was agreed to procure the information before next council meeting. It was resolved that Councillor Mathews and the clerk should pay a visit of inspection to the council's reserve at Ashburton. The Chairman of the Finance Committee reported for the past fortnight as follows.— Receipts .£B7 15s lid, debit at bank J6£44 193. Accounts to the amount of £7 6s were ■ passed for payment. Councillor Weston said that, aa this was the final meeting at which the present mayor would preside, he tad very great p'easure in moving a very hearty vote o£ thanks to th^s retiring mayor, for the manner in which he had conducted the business during his two years of office. Councillor Mathewa second the motion, endorsing all that the mover had remarked. The motion • waa carried unanimously. Before adjourning, the mayor-i4ect invitsd the councillors to a luncheon on Wednesday, af ier the installation.
